Is your category uninvested, or contested?

Read the supply side of your category results page before you fund anything. A page one held by low-authority pages is an opening; one held by established publishers is a normal authority fight with a longer horizon.

The SaaS Category Supply Check

Do this with the live results page open and a link tool to hand. The first three items decide whether the category is worth funding at all.

Item 1

Have you pulled your category term's live top ten and recorded the lowest domain rating, and at what position?

A low-authority page holding a top-five slot is the clearest signal of an unfunded category.

Item 2

Do you know how many results carry fewer than 5 page-level referring domains?

Page-level links, not domain-level. This is the supply signal that matters.

Item 3

Does an exact-match domain rank in the top ten?

Exact-match domains ranking is a symptom of thin competition, not of clever SEO.

Item 4

Have you counted the AI Overview sitelinks and read every source?

How many are established publishers in your category, and how many are agency blogs?

Item 5

Have you joined your Search Console top-10 pages to the URLs AI engines cite?

What share of your ranking pages are never retrieved?

Item 6

Have you filtered for pages that are cited, rank on page one, and return zero clicks?

The pages doing work you are not being credited for.

Item 7

Have you measured share of voice per engine, and can you state the spread between your best and worst engine on the same day?

Exclude any engine returning exactly 1.0 and 0.0 across brands, and say that you did.

Your category's supply side (optional)

Items 1 to 3 decide whether this is an opening or an authority fight. Items 5 to 7 decide whether you can tell what happens next.

One category, one results page, one day, one panel. Results pages are volatile and can be geo-anchored — re-pull before funding anything against this read.

An uninvested category is an opening with a deadline: it stays open exactly as long as nobody else reads the same page one.
